Meet Our Team Ben Curtis – Founder Playing golf has presented a lot of opportunities to Ben but starting the Ben Curtis Family Foundation has been the most fulfilling. After realizing hunger was an issue in his own backyard he knew something needed to be done. As for his “day job,” Ben started playing golf at the age of three. He grew up 50 yards from the putting green at Mill Creek Golf Course in Ostrander, Ohio. His grandfather built the golf course and Ben’s mom and dad have been working there since it opened in 1973. His mom works in the golf shop and his dad is the superintendent at the family-run course.Ben is very hands-on with the Foundation. He picks up all of the food and delivers it to the church to be packed, while helping assemble and deliver the bags to the schools. Ben also donates his time to help raise money and awareness for the Foundation through golf. In 1996 Ben came to Kent State University on a golf scholarship and played under renowned head coach Herb Page. He was a three-time All-American and graduated in 2000. Ben earned his PGA TOUR card through qualifying school in Palm Springs, Calif. Ben solidified his place in the history books in 2003 when he won the British Open, becoming the first golfer since Francis Ouimet in 1913 to win in his major championship debut. With the stunning victory, he vaulted from 396th in the world rankings to 35th. Ben has four career victories on the PGA TOUR. He made his first appearance in the Ryder Cup in 2008 at Valhalla, where his 2 & 1 singles victory over Lee Westwood helped Team USA end its streak of three consecutive losses to Team Europe. She is also in contact with the principals at all four schools to make sure the needs of the children are being met. She handles all the food ordering and the packing and delivering. Candace also oversees all of the marketing and event planning for the foundation. In 2003, Candace and Ben were married the week while he was playing in the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
